If there ever was a time to kill two birds with one stone, the time is now for our nuclear missile force.
The episode at Malmstrom Air Force Base is a sad one and regrettable, but it serves as a stark reminder that keeping hundreds of Minuteman missiles on alert is risky, costly, and superfluous.
It is the perfect time for a reduction in force – trim the alert numbers to 40, and let an equivalent number of officers go (say, 400?). The savings would be in the billions, and using a much smaller pool of officers could possibly ensure integrity.
