Fusion scientists at Florida A&M’s Center for Plasma Science and Technology achieved “first plasma,” successfully constructing a mini-fusion reactor in their lab. Financed by a $949,000 grant from the Department of Energy, the mini-reactor is modeled after the internationally-backed ITER project currently under construction in the south of France. Florida A&M’s reactor is called a Spheromak and it is 5 feet wide and 2 feet tall. While not meant to generate net energy, FAMU’s reactor can be a tool for training the next generation of fusion scientists.
