Emily Carter, the founding Director of the Gerhard R. Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment at Princeton University, called for increased funding for fusion energy research. Noting the dire consequences that may result from climate change, Carter emphasized the role fusion energy can play in meeting global energy demands in the future. However, U.S. funding for fusion has been “starved”, ceding the lead to other countries, Carter said. From the article:

“Right now it’s the case in the United States that the fusion budgets have really been starved and whatever money there is going toward [other projects],” Carter said.

While U.S. research budgets have dwindled, Carter said other countries continue to make advances that could set them ahead.

“There has to be a much larger investment in fusion science. Basically other countries right now are doing that — China, South Korea, Japan, Germany — they are all moving ahead of us,” Carter said.
