A nuclear-armed Iran presents a significant security challenge to the United States. Therefore, it is imperative that the U.S. continues to implement an effective, fact-based policy to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

This fact sheet counters misperceptions about Iran’s nuclear program by providing an overview of assessments by the IAEA and United States.

Official assessments of Iran’s nuclear program have consistently found that Iran discontinued its structured nuclear program in 2003, although experiments in weaponization may have continued past that time. Moreover, the U.S. has determined that the Iranian leadership has not made a decision to pursue a nuclear weapon.
