Russia to build world’s largest laser for fusion energy
The Voice of Russia reported that Russia plans to build the world’s largest laser to produce energy from fusion. By using lasers, extreme temperatures and pressure can crush hydrogen atoms, fusing them together and releasing energy. Currently, the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has the world’s largest lasers. Russia plans to surpass the NIF”s capabilities. From the article:
With the help of such laser devices, scientists hope to learn more about energy processes in the conditions of high density of matter – like, say, the processes that take place in the nuclei of stars. Thus, such experiments may help astrophysicists. In fact, physicists still know little about the essence of matter, especially about how substances “behave” in the conditions of high density and high pressure. Such lasers can be used for many other purposes of physical science as well.
