Frazer-Nash Continues Work on Fusion Project
Frazer-Nash, an engineering consultancy, recently secured a contract with the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) to support the ITER nuclear fusion project. Due to the firm’s expertise in dynamic structural analysis and the nuclear sector, Frazer-Nash is responsible for the ICRH antenna that is used to heat plasma. Frazer-Nash will test the antenna’s performance in preliminary design stage in order to prepare it for future testing. From the article:
“In order to initiate and maintain fusion, the plasma within the reactor is heated to very high temperatures. According to Frazer-Nash, a proportion of the energy required to heat the plasma is delivered via the Ion Cyclotron Resonant Heating (ICRH) System. The ICRH antenna emits radio frequency (RF) which resonate with ions within the plasma.
The antenna is the last part of a large system delivering RF power to the plasma, and comprises of complex, internally water cooled, stainless steel and titanium components. “
