Dr. Steven O. Dean, one of the leading voices on fusion energy, has a great book out about the history of fusion, “Search for the Ultimate Energy Source.” The book is a comprehensive history of the American Fusion Energy program and is well worth reading. Dr. Dean is the President of the Fusion Power Associates, an association devote to “the timely development and acceptance of fusion as a socially, environmentally and economically attractive source of energy.”

The book is clear that the funding and political challenges we face in developing nuclear fusion are similar today to challenges in previous decades. He notes that scientific progress has been significant, but that in the United States, there has been little investment in new machines since the 1970s.
