ASP Chairman and Former Senator Gary Hart’s Statement on President Obama’s State of the Union Address
Washington, DC – Today, ASP Chairman of the Board and former Senator Gary Hart released the following statement in response to President Obama’s State of the Union Address last night:
“We applaud President Obama for reiterating his commitment to clean energy and addressing climate change in the coming months. The consequences associated with changes to Earth’s climate will represent one of the greatest national security challenges of the coming decades, whether it manifests itself as increased climate refugees, failed states, food and water scarcity, extremism or even terrorism. To achieve climate and energy security, we must end America’s dependence on foreign oil from nations whose interests are not always our own. In its place, we must spark a green energy revolution that is profitable, will strengthen our economy and create jobs for hard working Americans. The President has set a clear course. ASP looks forward to continuing our mission to educate the American public about this urgent national security challenge.”

The American Security Project (ASP) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy research and education initiative dedicated to fostering knowledge and understanding of a range of national security and foreign policy issues. It is organized around the belief that honest public discussion of national security requires an informed citizenry—one that understands the dangers and opportunities of the twenty-first century and the spectrum of available responses. ASP was formed to help Americans—from opinion leaders to the general public—understand how national security issues relate directly to them, and to explain challenges and threats in a way that spurs constructive action.
