Warner stresses security implications of climate change

At a recent forum sponsored by the Pew Project former Senator John Warner (R-VA) discussed the national security implications of climate change. Specifically, Sen. Warner stated climate change could lead to conflict in fragile regions across the globe, and ignoring the facts could put a great risk to those who serve our country.

The Central Intelligence Agency recently reported that global warming could hurt the United States’ military bases, and energy, food, and water supplies. Although energy legislation is in the works, Warner says the US is not leading the world with a sound energy policy.

“Countries all over this world are way ahead of us — China, India, Germany, France. France has 80 percent of its power from nuclear plants. We have a mere 22 percent. The world is moving ahead, and Uncle Sam is sort of sitting back.”
