Washington, D.C. – President Barack Obama recently announced the appointment of ASP Board member David Thorne as United States Ambassador to Italy and San Marino. In response, ASP President Vice Admiral Lee Gunn, USN (Ret.) released the following statement:

“We congratulate our friend and colleague David Thorne on his nomination as United States Ambassador to Italy and San Marino. This is only the latest embodiment of David’s dedication to our country stretching from his service in Vietnam, through a lifetime of energetic involvement in our democratic process and culminating in this nomination. As an entrepreneur, as a veteran, and as someone with strong ties to the region, Mr. Thorne is extremely well suited to cultivate stronger economic and diplomatic ties between the Unites States, Italy, and the European Union. We look forward to continuing to work with David on these and other important issues.”

The American Security Project (ASP) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy research and education initiative dedicated to fostering knowledge and understanding of a range of national security and foreign policy issues. It is organized around the belief that honest public discussion of national security requires an informed citizenry-one that understands the dangers and opportunities of the twenty-first century and the spectrum of available responses. ASP was formed to help Americans-from opinion leaders to the general public-understand how national security issues relate directly to them, and to explain challenges and threats in a way that spurs constructive action.
