THIS WEEK’S EPISODE

On this week’s episode of ‘What’s Next?’ Maggie Feldman-Piltch speaks with ASP Board President Nelson Cunningham about trade, prosperity, and security. Trade agreements set the rules of the road, and the correlation between strong governance and security is well established. This week’s conversation looks at this very issue in closer detail, with a focus on how TPP could in fact be the rising tide that lifts all boats.

Nelson Cunningham is President of McLarty Associates, the international strategic advisory firm headed by former White House Chief of Staff and Special Envoy for the Americas Thomas F. “Mack” McLarty III. Mr. Cunningham was also Special Advisor to President Clinton for Western Hemisphere Affairs and previously served as a counsel at the White House and as General Counsel of the Senate Judiciary Committee under Senator Joseph Biden. Prior to that, he was a federal prosecutor in New York under then-U.S. Attorney Rudolph Giuliani and also served as a foreign policy and trade advisor to the 2004 Kerry campaign. Mr. Cunningham is a member of the Secretary of State’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board, the State Department Advisory Committee on International Economic Policy (ACIEP), and past chairman of the Export-Import Bank’s Advisory Committee.

About “What’s Next?”

“What’s Next?” is American Security Project’s weekly, non-partisan podcast series featuring interviews with national security leaders and critical issue experts. Each episode runs about 30 minutes- making it the perfect addition to your DC commute.

Hosted by Maggie Feldman-Piltch and produced by Matthew Wallin, the conversations go beyond the dinner party commentary and offer guests the opportunity to discuss their vision for security in the 21st century, the strategy that vision requires, and what it means for America going forward- in less time than it takes you to get to work. With topics ranging from geo-economics to nuclear security, cultural diplomacy to energy security and asymmetric operations, “What’s Next?” is one of the many ways ASP works to raise the American public’s understanding of complex security issues we face.
