New ASP BCAS Member, Google, is “crossing a milestone” by securing enough renewable energy to offset its electricity needs worldwide. This includes 13 data centers and offices which consume about “5.7 terawatt hours of electricity annually — nearly the same amount as San Francisco.” Such an achievement is bound to be noticed and The Washington Post highlighted their success in a recent article. The article explained that Google believes,

“it is now in a position to offset every megawatt hour of electricity supplied by a power plant running on fossil fuels with renewable energy that the Mountain View, California, company has purchased through a variety of contracts. About 95 percent of Google’s renewable energy deals come from wind power farms, with the remainder from solar power.”

In addition, Google noted that they still hope “to make it possible for all of its renewable energy to be directly piped into its offices and data centers around the clock.” Improving our electric grid may not be a hot topic at the moment, but with growing climate change-related impacts, updating our grid to incorporate more renewables is critical for the future.
