ASP Board Member & Former EPA Administrator Gov. Whitman on Future of EPA
ASP Board Chairperson and former EPA administrator and Governor of New Jersey, Christine Todd Whitman authored an op-ed in the Washington Post and spoke on NPR, providing advice for the newly elected next EPA administrator, Scott Pruitt. Gov. Whitman stressed the importance of the EPA and how protective regulations like the Clean Air Act were borne out of public demand. She further noted that because of these successes,
“Pruitt would be wise not to try to walk back the real progress that has been made.”
Gov. Whitman also highlighted the importance of addressing climate change; citing the possibility of sea levels increasing by an entire foot on the Atlantic coast in the next 40 years. This threatens both our coastal communities and our national security as many military bases are situated along the coast. She concluded the piece by arguing that, by improving energy efficiency and expanding nuclear and other clean energy sources,
“The new administration can vigorously pursue its economic goals while allowing the EPA to do what it was created to do: protect the health of the American people and our land.”
