Retired Officers & Veterans Urge Senators to Vote Against Roll Back of Methane Regulations
Over 2,000 military veterans, including four U.S. Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps generals, signed onto a letter urging Senators to vote against the roll back of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s Methane Waste and Prevention Rule. The rule is designed to curb methane emissions on public lands. The signatories argue the rule “ensures the responsible development of our energy resources, the protection of taxpayers, and our role in the world on energy security.”
They explain that already, “hundreds of millions of dollars-worth of natural gas is wasted through deliberate venting and flaring of methane.” In addition, by removing this rule, tens of millions of dollars in royalty revenue that previously went to fund local and federal infrastructure projects would be lost.
ASP recently highlighted the benefits of this rule in a statement; highlighting national security as one of the key concerns. Flaring, and resulting greenhouse gas emissions from that flaring, adds to the already critical threat of climate change. ASP noted that those opposed to the regulation are arguing for “slower revenues for companies, fewer jobs, and lower royalties for the government.”
