Perspective: The Russian National Guard
In 2016 Russian President Vladimir Putin established The Russian National Guard, a new paramilitary force combining several previous internal security forces under a unified structure answering directly to him. Multiple, plausible reasons have been given for its creation, including counter-terrorism and protecting the Kremlin from the threat of internal dissent. However, there are additional roles the National Guard could undertake that have been neglected in existing analysis. This report discusses available information about the Russian National Guard, including its operation, equipment, and leadership, and analyzes its possible uses in Putin’s strategic thinking.
