A Star in a Jar
In this documentary, EnergyNOW! Managing Editor Susan McGinnis explores the world of fusion energy.
From being dubbed as the “Holy Grail” of energy to being considered science fiction in Hollywood movies like Back to the Future, fusion energy has a reputation as complicated as the technology itself.
In order to discover the true potential of fusion energy, McGinnis visits both the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab (PPPL); two places which are leading the development of Fusion energy. Both the ORNL and PPPL are currently pursuing the development of fusion energy in concert with the Department of Energy (DOE) as part of our national energy policy.
According to the DOE,
The National Energy Policy states that fusion power has the long-range potential to serve as an abundant and clean source of energy
This long range potential is currently transforming into present potential as fusion energy is being achieved in multiple laboratories around the world. Stewart Prager at the PPPL states
Fusion could have a transformative effect on the world. It’s a limitless source of energy and it has a zero contribution to green house gases, it’s entirely clean…
It’s safe, there’s no chance of any sort of runaway reaction and the fuel comes from seawater…so its available to all nations…so hopefully it will reduce the conflict over natural resources…its nearly a perfect energy source
The potentials of fusion energy are real and significant and as this documentary illustrates, the world is waking up to those potentials.
