ASP In The News: Vice Admiral Kevin Green, USN (Ret.) in the Orlando Sentinel
Vice Admiral Kevin Green recently published an op-ed in the Orlando Sentinel preceding his participation in a panel on security in a changing climate in East Central Florida. This event will take place on October 29 at Full Sail University at 10:30 AM EDT. Congressman Michael Waltz (FL-06) will provide opening remarks then Brevard County Commissioner Bryan Lober, Orange County Commissioner Tony Ortiz, and Dale Ketcham of Space Florida will join VADM Green on the panel.
Within this piece, VADM Green comments on the climate changes he has observed throughout his more than 30-year career as a naval officer. From this perspective, he paints a picture of how a worsening climate security landscape affects national security interests. Green goes on to say that:
“While attending the U.S. Naval Academy over 50 years ago, we midshipmen never observed high water breaching the banks of Chesapeake Bay into downtown Annapolis. Today, portions of City Dock are underwater 50-60 days annually due to sea level rise.”
VADM Green later comments on the necessary steps needed for effective military preparation in the face of climate change:
“As climate science evolves, planning for the future must be flexible and include dynamic mitigation and resilience measures. Further, mitigation and adaptation measures should have long-term solutions to be most cost effective.”
