PRESS RELEASE: ASP Calls for More Robust American Leadership in the Global Fight Against the Coronavirus

Washington, D.C., December 20, 2021 – This afternoon, the American Security Project’s (ASP) board of directors sent a letter to President Biden calling for more robust American global immunization leadership.
ASP’s board reminded the administration that, “…only a tiny fraction of the federal response has been focused overseas.” In order to effectively combat and end this ongoing pandemic, the Biden administration needs “to chart a new course and embark on a substantial and vigorous effort on the global stage to make available and distribute vaccines to needy populations around the world.”
Beyond dedicating more resources to the global vaccination effort, the board called elevating the personnel responsible for the global response by appointing a White House Global Coronavirus Response Coordinator, similar to the role of current White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain during the 2014 Ebola epidemic. Such a demonstration of renewed resolve would send a powerful message to the world and greater American leadership “could be the step that breaks the back of the current pandemic.”
Signers of this letter include Senator Gary Hart, Former New Jersey Governor and EPA administrator Christine Todd Whitman, and Admiral William Fallon, USN (Ret.).
