After a difficult recruiting year in 2022, the U.S. military is seeking more ways to prevent the shortfall affecting the army. Though the other military services successfully met mission in their recruiting goals, they did so by draining the pool of delayed entry recruits for 2023. The single biggest reason for disqualification is overweight and obesity. This briefing note offers a summary of the ways in which obesity affects military recruiting and presents a condensed version of the recommendations made in ASP’s 2022 report: Obesity’s Increasing Threat to Military Readiness.
