ASP in the News: Climate Security Director Jessica Yllemo on America Adapts
On July 24th, ASP Climate Security Programs Director Jessica Yllemo, was interviewed in an episode of the America Adapts podcast on “The U.S. Department of Defense Adapts to Climate Change.” The episode featured key leaders within the Department of Defense (DoD) and their external partners at the DoD Climate Resilience Workshop. The interview elaborated on the role that climate change plays as a threat multiplier in undermining U.S. national security. Yllemo explained that,
“climate impacts everything we are doing nationally and strategically.”
From natural disasters to terrorism, Yllemo gave several examples of areas where climate is impacting military readiness and the security environment abroad. During the episode, she explained that the largest barrier to addressing the impacts of climate change on the military is the lack of manpower working in the intersection of national security and climate. The episode further discussed how recent policy decisions are helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change on military operations and the future of efforts to reduce DoD energy use to create a more effective military fighting force.
