Event Recap: Human Impacts of Disaster—Understanding the Climate and Resilience Nexus
On September 12, 2024, in conjunction with Emory University, ASP held an event at the Science Gallery Atlanta in Georgia to discuss the ways in which climate change directly affects the people and security of Atlanta and Georgia at large. The event was ASP’s 45th stop on its National Climate Security Tour. Moderated by ASP COO Matthew Wallin, the panel included Dr. Michelle Covi, Dr. Michelle Ritchie, Atlanta City Councilmember Jason Dozier, and CDR Mark Nevitt, USN (Ret.).
The panel discussed a wide ranging array of topics from a variety of perspectives. CDR Nevitt spoke about the legal aspects of responding to climate disasters and the mechanisms in place that encourage people to build homes and structures in disaster prone areas. Councilmember Dozier discussed the impact of climate on Atlanta itself, the future influx of climate refugees from other areas in Georgia, and the policies he believes are necessary to reduce Atlanta’s climate footprint. Dr. Michelle Covi explored DoD’s perspective on climate and the impact on DoD facilities in Georgia, including coastal resilience. Dr. Michelle Ritchie’s remarks analyzed the way climate change impacts public health, food and water security, and the necessity of disaster preparedness. A full video of the event is available below.
