Holland featured by E&E News: “Report touts LNG security but finds no real winners in energy mix”
ASP’s new report, America’s Energy Choices 2012, by Senior Climate and Energy Fellow Andrew Holland, was just released. It is already picking up coverage, as seen by Gayathri Vaidyanathan’s article on E&E News. While the report covers all available energy choices, Vaidyanathan focus is on the recent and timely natural gas boom:
The report from the American Security Project found no clear winners among energy choices including natural gas, oil and coal and alternative energy choices such as wind, solar, hydro, biomass and geothermal.
“Each has different drawbacks,” said Andrew Holland, senior fellow for climate at the ASP and author of the report. “Too many times, it seems like politicians just pick one or the other, they don’t look at it as energy security, and economic stability and environmental sustainability.”
But the analysis found that the shale boom has boosted American energy security, with the technological revolution creating enough gas to supply the United States for the next 110 years. By eliminating the need for liquefied natural gas imports, the shale boom has freed up LNG to go to Europe and undercut the dominance of Russia in the region, the report found.
Natural gas comprises a very important component of America’s energy mix, but it is not a solve all, as Vaidyanthan recognizes. This notion was also realized by President Obama in his last State of the Union when he said we need an “all-of-the-above” solution, meaning we need to diversify our energy portfolio.
