Douglas R. Young’s practice emphasizes trials, appeals, investigations and related matters in federal and state courts throughout the United States. His expertise includes white collar defense and parallel civil and regulatory proceedings; intellectual property; and securities, unfair competition, and antitrust (including significant class action work). Mr. Young has also served as a federal court Special Master in both complex civil cases and in multi-defendant criminal cases and, for 18 years, served by court appointment on the Federal Criminal Justice Act trial panel for the Northern District of California. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
Mr. Young has earned Fellowships in the American College of Trial Lawyers (where he chaired the Federal Criminal Procedure Committee and the Northern California State Committee, and served on the national Board of Regents), the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the International Society of Barristers, the National Trial Lawyers (Top 100 Trial Lawyers – CA), the American and California Academies of Appellate Lawyers, Litigation Counsel of America, the Academy of Court Appointed Masters and the American Institute of Criminal Law Attorneys. He is also a Patron Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a member of the American Law Institute and the American Judicature Society. Mr. Young served as President of the Bar Association of San Francisco, as a Lawyer Representative to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference, is a Master (and former President) of the McFetridge American Inn of Court, and is a former President of the Northern California Chapter of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers.
He has also served on the Ninth Circuit’s Advisory Committee on Rules of Practice and Operating
Procedures and on the California Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on Lawyer Regulation. He is a recipient of the American Bar Association’s Pro Bono Publico Award, the Criminal Justice Achievement Award from the Criminal Trial Lawyers Association of Northern California, the D. Lowell Jensen award for Contributions to the Criminal Bar in recognition of his contributions to the Bay Area criminal law bar, and the Distinguished Jurisprudence Award from the Anti-Defamation League. Mr. Young is listed in The Best Lawyers in America in six categories (Appellate Law, Bet-the-Company Litigation, Commercial Litigation, Litigation – Antitrust, Litigation – Securities and White Collar Criminal Defense) and named the Best Lawyers 2014 San Francisco Litigation – Securities “Lawyer of the Year,” is consistently recognized in Chambers USA in two categories (White Collar Crime and Government Investigations [Band 1] and General Commercial Litigation [Band 2]), and is listed in Who’s Who Legal (International and California editions) (Business Crime).
