PAST Event: Understanding the Strategic & Legal Context of Drone Strikes
The American Security Project cordially invites you to a panel discussion:
Understanding the Strategic & Legal Context of Drone Strikes
Thursday, January 24th, 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Join us for a fact-based discussion with leading experts on counterterrorism about how we can better understand the effects of America’s drone campaign. This event will launch ASP’s latest paper on drone policy and doctrine, as part of a continuing project.
While the public continues to debate the legality, morality, and limits of the U.S. government’s targeted killing policy, it is important to ground the discussion in facts. We will discuss the legal constraints of drone strikes, as well as how to understanding the effects these strikes have in the communities where they occur.
The speakers:
Benjamin Wittes is a senior fellow in Governance Studies at The Brookings Institution and co-director of the Harvard Law School-Brookings Project on Law and Security. He focuses on legal issues surrounding the war on terrorism and national security, judicial nominations and confirmations, and the federal courts. He is the editor-in-chief of the Lawfare blog.
Daphne Eviatar is Senior Counsel in Human Rights First’s Law and Security Program. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Politico, Harper’s and many others. She writes a blog on the Huffington Post and speaks frequently about national security and human rights in the media.
