ASP Honors Senator Richard Lugar for His Leadership and Contributions to National Security
Sen. Lugar discusses concerns and prospects for the future at presentation ceremony
WASHINGTON D.C., 25 July 2012 – Today, the American Security Project presented Senator Richard Lugar with an award commemorating his many years of service and leadership in promoting US national security interests.
Senator Lugar met with Senator John Kerry, other members of the American Security Project Board, and leaders of the nonproliferation community to discuss his vision for strengthening the U.S. commitment to global nuclear security.
Brigadier General Stephen A. Cheney USMC (Ret.), CEO of the American Security Project said: “
In today’s world we sometimes forget what it means to put your country first and politics last. Senator Richard Lugar always puts his country first. Every one of us has benefited from his efforts to make this a safer world.”
“Senator Lugar’s vision to make the world a safer place by the establishment of the Nunn-Lugar program has changed the course of history.”
Senator John Kerry said:
“Senator Lugar’s efforts to find serious answers to some of foreign policy’s most vexing questions cannot be replicated, and the Senate would be a stronger institution if more of its members really understood the difficult, substantive work he performed so skillfully for decades to bring both parties together in common cause on issues of national security.”
Senator Richard Lugar said:
“I am honored to accept the recognition of my friends and colleagues in efforts to address the challenges posed by nuclear proliferation.”
“The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction remains the number one national security threat facing the United States and the international community. We continue to work on the global expansion of the Nunn-Lugar program to secure, monitor, and destroyed weapons of mass destruction and related materials and delivery systems.”
