On June 7th, ASP Senior Research Scientist Courtney Manning was interviewed for a piece on ABC7 News examining the Army’s recent success in achieving its recruiting goals after two years of falling short. While recent gains in recruitment show promise, Manning pushed readers to consider the context of that success:

“Through April, the Army had a recruiting goal of around 24,000. At the same time last year, the Army’s goal was around 32,000. The bar has been lowered by about 25%, Manning pointed out Friday. She believes most of the newly met needs are because the Army cut its demand. “That’s not to say that there aren’t changes happening,” she added.”

The U.S. Army has bolstered its recruiting efforts through initiatives like the Future Soldier Preparatory Course, which helps soldiers overcome academic and physical statuses that prevent them from serving. On this, Manning makes an important point:

“Despite the Army’s 99% achievement on its lowered recruiting goal this year, we might not see the impacts of some of these initiatives until four or five years down the line.”
