Dante Disparte, ASP and BCAS Chairperson, has written a new piece in the Huffington Post discussing cyber threats and systemic financial risk.
His February 18 article, A Day Without Pay, delves into the systemic risks that threaten our financial sector and economy at large. He highlights the fact that since the Great Recession of 2008 the global threat landscape has evolved rapidly, especially in regards to cyber threats. Disparte stresses the dangers associated with our interconnected financial sector, and the potential for the next great collapse should one of the “dominoes” fall. He distinguishes cyber security as being very important in this “value chain” stating that, “Unless a business can run fully on paper and clipboards, which is an improbable case, they are vulnerable to cyber risk and other technological threats.”
Although interconnectedness is inherently risky it is also unavoidable in a modern economy. In light of this, Disparte stresses the importance of preparedness to mitigate these systemic risks. He concludes by outlining specific techniques that will defend against the agents of a potential economic catastrophe. He argues that all participants should assess and understand their security position and points of vulnerability with respect to cyber risk.
