Diplomats: Iranian Negotiations “Constructive”
The diplomats of the P5+1 countries have declared the recent summit with Iran to be successful and “constructive” with both sides working diplomatically with each other. However, it is too soon to view the meeting as a real breakthrough as this meeting barely touched upon the real issues of the Iranian nuclear program. Rather than genuine negotiation, this meeting was in the words of Karim Sadjadpour of the Carnegie Endowment for Peace, “a preliminary consultation to schedule a very complicated surgery.” However, all diplomacy needs to start somewhere and last weekend’s meeting is a good start.
The P5+1 have agreed to reconvene on May 23rd in Baghdad, which will be proceeded by a preparatory meeting of deputies. Hopefully this next meeting will be more substantive, leading to real negotiations and producing concrete steps to resolve this issue. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail and this issue is resolved peacefully and without a war that would be destabilizing and harmful for all sides.
