Bangladesh Conference: Keynote Speaker – Heather Variava, State Department, Bangladesh Office Director

Join us for lunch and a speech on the importance of Bangladesh in environmental and security concerns. Speaking to these issues will be Heather Variava, Bangladesh Office Director at the State Department. Her years of experience and expertise on the subject will shed light on the international implications of the security and environmental threats that face Bangladesh.

 The conference will take place on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at ASP’s office, 1100 New York Ave., 7th Floor West Tower. 
The session will begin promptly at 12:30 PM.

Heather Variava is the Director of the Office of Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives and Bhutan in the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.  A member of the U.S. Foreign Service, Ms. Variava has served overseas in Mumbai, India; Port Louis, Mauritius; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; and Dhaka, Bangladesh.  In Washington, she has served at the State Department Operations Center and on the Thailand desk.

Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Ms. Variava worked as a newspaper reporter in Waterville,  Maine.  Raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she received an undergraduate degree in international relations from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.  She has a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri, and, with a Rotary Graduate Scholarship, received a master’s degree in European Studies from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom.  In 2012, Ms. Variava received a master’s degree in national security strategy from the National War College in Washington, DC.  Her husband also works for the State Department, and the couple has two sons.

Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) is a leading think tank in Bangladesh. BIPSS is focused on strategic and security issues confronting Bangladesh and the wider Asia Pacific region. Through a group of dynamic researchers, BIPSS constantly endevaours to bridge the gap between academic research and policy analysis. BIPSS also includes several constituent units including the Bangladesh Centre for Terrorism Research (BCTR) and Bangladesh Centre for China Studies (BCCS).
