Between 1980 and 2017, China’s economy grew at breakneck speed, lifting millions out of poverty. Fossil fuels fueled much of China’s economic growth. As a result, China is now one of the world’s largest economies and the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide. Despite efforts to grow the share of its power generated by renewable energy sources, China is moving too slowly to meet global emissions targets aimed at slowing climate change.
