FACT SHEET: The Benefits of the New START Treaty
The American Security Project and the Consensus for American Security supported the New Strategic Arms Reduction treaty (New START) because it provided significant benefits to American national security. The following fact sheet describes the national security benefits that the United States has already obtained by ratifying this treaty with bipartisan support.
Why do we need a reminder about the benefits of this treaty? It’s already been ratified and we are safer now because of it, right?
Since New START was ratified with strong bipartisan support, there have been attempts to obstruct or delay the treaty’s implementation. It is essential that policymakers keep the national security benefits of the treaty in mind and avoid using the treaty to score political points.
