Geoffrey Styles: Does All-of-the-Above Energy Include Long Shots?

Over at The Energy Collective, Geoffrey Styles writes about plans to cut funding for fusion energy research. He talks about how budget cuts would be shortsighted, particularly since fusion energy holds so much promise. Slashing funding for fusion would cause irreparable damage to fusion research, but also to the world-class scientific workforce.

From the article:

However, even if ITER represented the very best chance to take fusion to the next level on its long path to deployment, the long-term implications of these cuts for US fusion science capabilities look significant.  As with the space program, once the highly trained and experienced fusion workforce and teams are laid off and broken up, it becomes enormously difficult to reconstitute them, if needed.

He also points out that the amount of money needed to continue fusion research is a drop in the bucket compared to subsidies for other renewable energy technologies, which often have much more political support.
