Foust credits Allen with “de-escalating” tension that had emerged last year between Petraeus and Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

But his tenure running the Afghanistan war has had its share of bumps, and analysts expect lawmakers will demand answers.

“Some of the biggest challenges of the war we’ve yet faced–the helicopter crash that killed 38 SEALs, the David Chen suicide scandal, escalating stories about war zone drug use, the Koran burnings, the latest shooting–have happened under his watch,” says Foust. “So there are a lot of questions to ask him.”
