John Greenwald of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) published a press release, detailing a roadmap to a fusion power plant. In the press release, Greenwald laid out several of the remaining challenges before fusion can be fully commercialized:

1. Development of computer codes to guide the design of DEMO plants.
2. Development of material for the interior of the plants.
3. Methods for extracting fusion power.
4. Methods for handling the exhaust from fusion reactions.
5. Requirements for devices to develop DEMO components.
