PAST EVENT: The Asia Society’s Fourth Annual Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit
Kuala Lumpur – American Security Project (ASP) Senior Fellow Dr. Evelyn Farkas has been chosen to participate in the Asia Society’s fourth annual Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit, to be held in Kuala Lumpur from November 20-22, 2009. Dr. Farkas joins other young leaders from various sectors who will explore “The Changing Face of Leadership: Crisis and Opportunity” at the Summit.
Dr. Evelyn Farkas is an expert on peace operations, post-conflict development, special operations, counter-proliferation and Asia. Prior to joining ASP, Dr. Farkas served as Executive Director of the Commission on the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction Prevention and Terrorism, as a Professional Staff Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, as Associate Professor at the US Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and as a Human Rights Officer and Election Supervisor for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
“I’m looking forward to joining the Young Leaders Summit and to sharing ASP’s research and insights,” said Dr. Farkas. “We have developed a framework for understanding terrorism and for gauging the effectiveness of American policy in Asia and around the world. In addition, we have examined the national security implications of climate change, which has already begun to impact many parts of Asia and will lead to scarcity of resources, diminished crop yields, extreme weather conditions and human migrations. We are all looking for the best way to respond to threats to our national and international security and this summit is an important first step in that process.”
The Asia Society’s Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit is part of a larger initiative designed to help emerging leaders from across the region develop common approaches to meet its shared challenges. “Asia 21 seeks to build networks of trust across geographic boundaries and help next generation leaders to educate one another in the highest ideals of values-based leadership,” said Asia Society Executive Vice President Jamie Metzl, who spearheads the program. “We need new types of leaders from every country who can both understand the transnational nature of the challenges we face and work together to address them, and are thrilled that Dr. Farkas will be joining our network.”
