The Chronicle – National Academies Backs Expanded Nuclear-Fusion Experiments

A report out on Wednesday from the National Academies says university researchers studying nuclear fusion still have a long way to go before overcoming the many scientific hurdles to the commercial generation of what is hoped to be a virtually limitless supply of energy.
But, a National Academies panel says in the report, enough progress has been made, and the need for alternative energy supplies is so great, that the government should consider allowing the use of its National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in California, for tests of creating energy from nuclear fusion.
