On Tuesday April 10th, the United States Institute of Peace held a panel, moderated by former national security advisor Stephen Hadley on the prospects of peace in Afghanistan.  On the panel was Ambassador Marc Grossman; Ahmed Rashid; former Afghan ambassador to Canada and France Omar Samad; Nilofar Sakhi, Founder and Chairperson of the Women’s Activities and Social Security Association, and Minister Mohammed Masoom Stanekzai, Presidential Adviser and Head of Secretariat of the Afghanistan High Peace Council.

The panel discussed the issues surrounding the future transition of the Afghan state and the need for the United States and European countries to stick with the plan for transition starting in 2014.  Most interestingly, many on the panel talked about the importance of regional cooperation and influence in Afghanistan’s transition.  Ahmed Rashid and Nilofar Sakhi notably spoke about the questions surrounding the reconciliation process with the Afghan Taliban and its consequences.  Overall, it is an extremely interesting conversation with key players involved in one of the most vexing foreign policy issues facing the United States today.
